Designed
and custom prosthetic legs that I will referenced to when drawing
my characters prosthetic leg for a more accurate
drawings as well as inspiration. The prosthetic leg
in the top left corner has helped in
developing the idea that the characters leg could be customised to her needs by
having pouches, hidden compartments to hold tools for when she is carving and
every day things.

Further Development Design For Blaze
Above are further digital designs for the sidekick character blaze.
Taking the sketch I did of the blowtorch with a hat I took it further by trying out different outfits, colours and expressions to try make him look like a gentleman and friendly character.
The drawing to the left is the 1 I have decided to develop further towards a final design.
Blaze Initial Sketches
Using the mood board I created I started with pencil sketches and digital sketches for sidekick character Blaze. The original idea was for him to be a tool box but then decided I would have him be 1 particular tool rather than a box with wheels.
Choose for him to be a blowtorch as it is a tool that I know from research that is used for adding shadows, effects, crevices and other extra looks to a wood sculpture; so I wanted him to be a helpful as well as a friend and sidekick to Mielikki.
Mielikki turn around
This is not final design turn around but it is what I will use to start the maquette as I will not being changing things such as her body figure, face and hair. Adjustments to things such as the clothes, prosthetic leg and body figure will be made to be more anatomically correct.
Further Mielikki Designs
More development sketches for Mielikki trying to get her face right and not completely realistic but not too simple. Also drawing a few main outfit variations and development of her leg.
The 1 on the far right is the 1 I will take further and do a turn around for.
The prosthetic leg will be developed more than that but so that I can get onto making a maquette sooner I will keep it how it is there for the turn around.
Side kick character Blaze and maquette style research
Maquettes by Bard sculpture studios (2014) for the production of How to train your dragon (2010) of the main character ‘Hiccup concept’ (right) and ‘Early toothless’ (bottom left)
These
sculpts are done by Damon Bard, they are in simple character style, possibly
made with an air drying clay which you can then paint. They fit the purpose
which they were made to be for which is character development of hiccup for
film they were for. It resembles the final design character that you see in theDamon
Bard maquettes are quite detailed but simple. They shows the personality of the
character clearly which is what makes them good and interesting.
Bards
maquettes are of an inspiration for me as they are how I want my final made and detailed maquette to look, not so much the style
but more of how it portrays the character clearly you can see the personality
and characteristic in all 3 of these models clearly. You can also get what kind
of character they are just from looking at the maquette.
Main character Mielikki research
Griffon Ramsey (2014) seen in the images to the above, is a chainsaw woodcarving artist from Texas USA, she is a self employed artist and sells her work online.
These
pictures are screenshots from 1 of YouTube videos of her sculpting and talking
about how she does her work, from drawing to wood block to fully detailed
woodcarving and what tools she uses to do it.
She
is a bit of an inspiration for my main female character as well as a big help
for referencing her for poses, for my character when her holding tools or a
chainsaw.

Initial sketches
Rough and detailed sketches of development of my main character Mielikki (I have decided to give her Miel as a nickname and as it is easier to remember and type) I used the previous mood boards as inspiration and an idea of poses to put the character in. I will combine some of the ideas on these pages to develop the look of the characters face and body.

Mielikki the chainsaw artist. Main female character
Mood board for my main female character Mielikki. This is to help me to build up sketches and give an idea of how I want her to look and a bit of who she is.
She will be a chainsaw carving artist, who is tough with short hair and wears overalls a lot.
This mood board is more of a inspiration for the look of how I want my character as to whether I want her to be short, colourful, and have a very expressive face and posture about her. It is also a look at the watercolour concept art style which is what I am going to using for my designs.
Blaze the Blow torch
Mood board for the secondary side kick character blaze the anthropomorphic blow torch.
This is to help with creating the character and to give a rough idea of what I want the character to look like.
